Petrine, the dedicated mother of their eight children,

demonstrated her fortitude waiting for the captain’s

safe return. Over five hundred lives were rescued

from the treacherous waters of Lake Michigan.

In recognition of their heroism, the captain and his

student crew were awarded The Gold Lifesaving Medal.
